Life was fairly normal for me before Crohn’s. I was working as an Outreach Coordinator for people with Parkinson’s Disease through a local hospital and was just married the year before. It was a Saturday in 2009 and my husband and I were headed to a new movie we had been talking about seeing, but a recurring pain in my gut just kept getting worse and instead I told him that we needed to go to the Emergency Room.
I had been having the pain for a few weeks, but it was too much to ignore any more. The Emergency Room Physician decided my condition was bad enough that they should admit me. Being admitted allowed the diagnosis to take place quickly as I didn’t have to wait for days to get imaging done and the results read. Results showed a lot of inflammation around the area where the small and large intestines meet. They were able to start me on some mild medications to bring the inflammation down.
I decided to cut out gluten after hearing that it may not be good for people with Crohn’s. I eventually got myself to a point that I didn’t need medication anymore and was doing really good. I was mainly just cutting out dairy and gluten and trying to eat healthier (less sugar/more veggies). I was doing so good that my Gastrointestinal Doctor was thinking that maybe I didn’t actually have Crohn’s and that it could be taken off of my medical chart.
However, it wasn’t much after thinking that I might have been misdiagnosed with Crohn’s that I had a severe flare that would not go away. I gave birth to my first-born a few months before and recall having to stop breastfeeding due to starting the medications. Much damage was done to my intestines that I was not getting the nutrients I needed from my food and I dropped from around 145 to 107 between mid-2011 to mid-2012. I felt like my life was slipping away.
I was scheduled for major surgery after imaging showed much inflammation and an abscess that had developed. My husband was getting worried because the surgery was going so long; it took them over three hours to remove a fair amount of damage intestine and to reconstruct what was left. The abscess had turned into a hard knot, which I remember the surgeon commenting that it was unexpected. That very low point in my life was giving way to something that only a few months prior I could not have envisioned. I would go from feeling hopeless to taking control of my health and my life.
Being so sick motivated me to research what possibilities might be out there for helping with Crohn’s. It didn’t make sense to me that these wonderful bodies that God gave us would fail so easy and that there was more of an explanation than just bad genetics. A few months before my surgery in November of 2012 I overhauled my diet in an effort to control my gut microbiome. I followed a very strict diet that cut out sugars, dairy, gluten, and highly processed foods. While this was not enough to reverse all the damage that had already been done, we had hope when the surgeon told us that other than what was damaged beyond repair looked healthy and he didn’t think my intestines looked like the intestines of someone that had Crohn’s.
So that is what got me to where I am today, wanting to help others with their health. There’s so much research out there showing how the gut function plays the key role in overall body function. Health starts with giving the gut what it needs so that it can function as God designed and allow the body to function as it was designed. A new lease on life is possible. I’m here to help you take your health to the next level with nutritional guidance and a focus on gut health.
